The purchasing decision
TPU and PVC describe material families, not a complete dry bag specification. A buyer still needs to know the backing fabric, coating or laminate construction, thickness, finish and joining method. Two bags advertised with the same material name can differ in handle, flexibility and how the finished seams are made. Ask for a written material description tied to the proposed model.
Evaluate candidates with the same packed contents and handling sequence. Fold the closure, check the surface around welds and inspect how strap anchors meet the shell. If a supplier proposes a substitute material, request a fresh sample rather than assuming that a similar colour or texture means equivalent performance.
Cost comparisons should include the complete construction. A cheaper shell may come with different reinforcement, hardware or production tolerances. State which characteristics matter to the intended use and agree how those characteristics will be checked. Environmental or chemical-compliance statements should refer to identifiable documentation for the selected material and destination market.
What to compare before ordering
| Decision | Review with the supplier | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Material build | Backing, coating, thickness and finish. | Record a specific construction, not just TPU or PVC. |
| Sample behaviour | Fold, handle and inspect the finished shell. | Use the same evaluation sequence for both candidates. |
| Change control | Alternative material and supporting documents. | Reapprove substitutions before production. |
Build a material substitution approval sheet
A material change can affect more than the feel of a swatch. Compare the original and proposed constructions in a finished reference bag with the same closure and reinforcement layout. Label the samples so photographs and notes can be traced to the exact material revision. Keep the intended market and use in view: a lightweight promotional bag and a repeatedly folded outdoor pack may prioritise different characteristics.
| Review point | Record for each candidate | Approval question |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Backing, coating or laminate, thickness and finish | Is the quoted construction identified clearly enough to reorder? |
| Closure handling | Fold sequence, recovery and packed opening | Can the selected construction close correctly with the planned load? |
| Joining and anchors | Seam layout, reinforcement and attachment areas | Does the complete sample need a new inspection after substitution? |
| Documents | Material identity, report scope and destination | Does each document actually apply to the proposed material? |
Do not approve a substitute only because the colour looks similar. Ask which drawing, material and hardware revisions will appear in the production specification. If a buyer requires chemical compliance or a finished-bag exposure test, write the applicable method and acceptance criteria separately. A supplier description such as “TPU waterproof bag” does not establish either result.

Resolve a material substitution before accepting the revised price
For custom TPU dry bags or custom PVC dry bags, ask the supplier to price the approved build and the proposed alternative as separate configurations. A change described only as “same material, lower cost” leaves the purchasing decision incomplete. Keep the original material reference visible beside the replacement and identify which other components stay the same.
| Quotation difference | Buyer decision | Release condition |
|---|---|---|
| Shell construction changes | Identify the backing, coating or laminate and agreed measurement basis. | The revised construction has its own material reference and finished-sample approval. |
| Only colour or finish changes | Review the exact colour with the intended print and panel layout. | The approved colour and decoration combination is identified by SKU. |
| A document is reused | Check the specimen identity and whether the document covers the proposed version. | Any missing scope is resolved before a compliance statement is used. |
Separate a material decision from a price decision. Record the change in unit price, sample work and packing assumptions without treating a lower quote as approval to substitute. If the buyer accepts a change with limitations, state those limitations on the specification rather than leaving them in a separate message. Repeat orders should name the accepted revision so the original and alternative do not become interchangeable by accident.

Include these details in your enquiry
- Proposed shell construction and thickness
- Surface finish and colour reference
- Joining method and reinforcement layout
- Required destination-market material documentation
Identify the model and the version of any drawing or artwork. Ask for assumptions, proposed changes, packing details and commercial terms to be shown in the quotation. MOQ, sample cost and production timing are confirmed for the agreed configuration.
Buyer questions
Does TPU automatically establish a waterproof rating?
No. A complete bag also includes seams, closures and attachments. Specify the assembled product and the intended test conditions.
Can I approve a material from a small swatch?
A swatch helps with colour and handle. It does not show how the selected material behaves in the finished closure, weld or strap attachment.
Material substitution approval record
Use this record when comparing a proposed material with an approved reference. TPU or PVC alone is not a complete material specification; record the construction and supplier reference for the exact sample.

When the sample needs another review
| Observation | Why it matters | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Material name is the only specification | Two materials with the same broad name can differ in construction and finish. | Request the exact supplier reference and agreed thickness or weight specification. |
| Only the loose fabric is approved | The finished bag includes seams, closures and decoration that need their own review. | Assess the assembled sample and identify any changed component interfaces. |
| A document does not identify the supplied material | A report may apply to another colour, material or configuration. | Check its sample identity, date and scope against the actual specification. |
